Dr Sean Wharton, assistant clinical professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, McMaster University, and medical director of the Wharton Medical Clinic in Burlington, Ontario, describes bias and prejudice and their effects on medical care, proposes steps towards minimizing bias in clinical practice, and emphasizes the role of identifying systemic racism within society and medicine.
