Prof. Leonard Wartofsky

Dr. Wartofsky is Emeritus Chairma, Department of Medicine at Washington Hospital Center and a Professor of Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, George Washington, Howard, and Maryland University Schools of Medicine.

He holds MS, MD, and MPH degrees from George Washington University, and was trained in internal medicine at Washington University, St. Louis, and in Endocrinology on the Harvard University Service/Boston City Hospital under Dr. Sidney Ingbar. At Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he was Director of Endocrinology and then Chair, Department of Medicine, and Consultant in Medicine to the Surgeon General. He has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, Association of American Physicians, Association of Professors of Medicine and as a Governor and Master of the American College of Physicians. He is past President of both the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society. Among his numerous other military and civilian awards, are the Distinguished Educator Award of the Endocrine Society, Distinguished Laureate of the ACP, Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award of George Washington University School of Medicine, the Robert H. Williams Leadership Award of The Endocrine Society, the Delbert A. Fisher Research Scholars Award of The Endocrine Society, the Gold Cane Award of MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the Washington University, Barnes Hospital House Staff Outstanding Achievement Award, the Sidney H. Ingbar Award of the Endocrine Society, and the Lewis E. Braverman Distinguished Lectureship Award of The American Thyroid Association. He was awarded with degrees of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Poznan, Poland, and the University of Athens, Greece.

Dr. Wartofsky's major clinical and research interest is in the management of patients with thyroid cancer, and he is the author or coauthor of over 400 articles or book chapters in the medical literature, and has served as editor of several endocrine texts, including books on thyroid cancer for both patients and physicians. He was Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism from 2010 to 2015 and Editor-in-Chief of Endocrine Reviews from 2015-2018.
