Trousseau sign is the involuntary carpal spasm (flexion of the wrist, hyperextension of the fingers, and adduction of the thumb) that occurs in a patient with hypocalcemia. The test is performed by inflating a blood pressure cuff 20 mm Hg above the patient’s systolic blood pressure and maintaining the pressure for ≥3 minutes. A positive test result occurs if signs of carpal spasm are noted during this time. Illustration courtesy of Dr Shannon Zhang.
