Dr. Adri Kok

Dr. Adri Kok is a Specialist Physician in private practice in Alberton, South Africa. Her diabetic clinic was established in 1996 with a team comprising of diabetic educators, ophthalmology group, podiatrists and dietetics practices. To date approximately 8 000 patients have been treated. Dr. Kok is an external examiner for Internal Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and an honorary lecturer from 2019.

Dr. Kok’s research interests include intensive care, pulmonology, rheumatology, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases and diabetes. She has given numerous national and international talks on topics such as diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, heart failure and hypertension. She is the national principal investigator for several multinational trials with a focus on diabetes. She serves on several advisory boards.

She is the immediate past president of the Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa and is presently the president of the International Society of Internal Medicine after serving on the executive committee from 2014 as the first women and first representative of Africa to achieve this distinction. In 2009 she received a Fellowship of the American College of Physicians and in 2016 a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

She was the chairman of the organising committee of the World Congress of Internal Medicine (WCIM) 2018 which was held in Cape Town and attracted physicians from 86 countries.

From 2019 she has been involved with developing the non-communicable disease management guidelines for the South African Department of Health as well as the prescribed minimum benefits through the Council of Medical Schemes. She is currently co-author of papers on diabetes mellitus and an international consensus guideline on the new insulins.
