Prof. Joanna Dionne

Dr. Joanna Dionne is Assistant Professor, Division of Critical Care with a cross-appointment with the Division of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Dionne obtained a Bachelor of Nursing Degree from the University of New Brunswick and was a Registered Nurse prior to starting her medical career. She obtained her Medical Degree from the DeGroote School of Medicine (2012) and holds a MSc in Health Research Methodology (HRM)(2010) also from McMaster. She completed her postgraduate training in Internal Medicine (2015), Gastroenterology Fellowship (2017) and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship (2019) at McMaster. At present, Dr. Dionne is completing her PhD in HRM and is in the Clinician Investigator Program, also at McMaster University. She has been a clinical scholar in the Division of Critical Care since 2019.

Dr. Dionne has served as the Chair of Methodology for the Alcohol and Liver Disease Guideline and the Extended Criteria Renal Transplant Guideline for Canadian Blood Services. She is the Chair of Methodology for the Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis Guideline and has been a methodologist for the Liver Management Guidelines for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. In addition, she has been Co-Chair of methodology for the Transfusion Guideline in Bleeding Critically ill Patients, and the Transfusion Guideline in Non-bleeding Critically Ill Patients for the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. Dr. Dionne has completed this work as a guideline methodologist for the GUIDE Group.

She is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the international prospective cohort study “Diarrhea, Interventions, Consequences and Epidemiology in the Intensive Care Unit (DICE-ICU) Study”. She was named a DeGroote Scholar during her graduate training and has received peer-reviewed funding from Physicians’ Services Incorporated (PSI), the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG), and the Regional Medical Associates (RMA). Dr. Dionne has recently completed her Research Trainee Fellowship with PSI. Dr. Dionne. Also, she has received a Presidential Citation from the Society of Critical Care Medicine for her contributions to the society.

Dr. Dionne has 23 lifetime peer-reviewed publications, 20 peer-reviewed abstracts, and has delivered 4 lifetime oral presentations. She has been published in Intensive Care Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and American Journal of Gastroenterology. Over the years, she has contributed to teaching as a Medical Foundation's clinical skills preceptor, OSCE examiner, lecturer, case-based learning, and Journal Club facilitator.
