Prof. Reinold Gans

Dr. Reinold Gans studied Medicine at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. After graduation he completed is training in internal medicine at the Free University Hospital, Amsterdam. He wrote his thesis about insulin and blood pressure regulation. In 1997 he was appointed professor of Medicine, shortly followed by his appointment as head and chair of the department of Medicine at the University Medical Center Groningen, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), the Netherlands, a position he still currently holds.

He chairs the taskforce that has to establish a Comprehensive Centre of Acute Care in the UMCG and the north-east Netherlands.

He chaired the committee introducing competency-based medical education in post-graduate training in the Netherlands for all medical specialties. He was member of the writing committee on graduate training in medicine at the RUG. Until Jan, 2017 he chaired the national committee of program directors overseeing the training in internal medicine in the Netherlands. He chaired the working group of the European Training Requirements in Internal Medicine that has been adopted in Oct, 2016. Currently, he is chairman of the Dutch Hospitalist Society, member of the enlarged executive board of UEMS, president of the UEMS section of Internal medicine and president of the European Board of Internal Medicine.

He authored more than 300 original publications in the field of medicine and medical education.
