Prof. Andrzej Januszewicz

Andrzej Januszewicz was born in 1957 in Warsaw, Poland. He is married to Magdalena, associate professor in radiology, and they have two children Elżbieta, doctor in biology and Wladyslaw , doctor in medicine, gastroenterology specialist.
Andrzej Januszewicz studied medicine at Warsaw Medical University where he received his MD in 1981 and between 1981 and 1982 he completed his internship. Between 1981-1982 and 1984-1985 Andrzej Januszewicz was a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Hypertension, Cornell University Medical Center, New York, USA (Head: prof J.Laragh) and at the Department of Hypertension, Ochsner Medical Foundation, New Orleans, USA (Head: prof E. Frohlich), respectively.
In 1986 Andrzej Januszewicz began to work at the Department of Hypertension and Internal Medicine, Warsaw, Poland (Head: prof. W. Januszewicz) remaining at Warsaw Medical University until 1998. In 1986 he received his doctoral degree, in 1993 was appointed associate professor in medicine and in 1998 was nominated professor of medicine by the President of Polish Republic.
From 1998 until now Andrzej Januszewicz is working at the National Institute of Cardiology and since 2000 until now he is a Head of Department of Hypertension. Between 2008-2017 he was a Chairman of the Scientific Council of the National Institute of Cardiology and since 2017 until now he is a Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Council.
From 2010 Andrzej Januszewicz is a member of Polish Academy of Sciences. Between 2004-2006 he was a President of the Polish Society of Hypertension and currently he is a Council member of the Society.
From 2017 Andrzej Januszewicz is a member of the Council of the European Society of Hypertension and from 2019 until June 2023 was a Secretary of the European Society of Hypertension and currently he is a Vice President of ESH.
His main research topics in the field of hypertension were the role of atrial natriuretic hormone, endothelin-1 and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. As a visiting fellow at Cornell University he was working in the research team who as one of the first in the world presented the structure and biologic activities of atrial natriuretic hormone (Nature, 1985).
Current research of Andrzej Januszewicz focuses on the clinical aspects of renovascular hypertension, pheochromocytoma-paraganglioma and primary aldosteronism. Other areas of interest include obstructive sleep apnoea, resistant hypertension, interventional treatment of difficult to treat and resistant hypertension. Current particular interest is focused on clinical and molecular aspects of fibromuscular dysplasia and malignant hypertension.
Andrzej Januszewicz has a wide experience in clinical research, including membership of steering committees of several international trials in hypertension, diabetes and lipid disorders that have been important for clinical practice.
Andrzej Januszewicz publications include over 500 articles, book chapters and books and he has published 360 original scientific articles and review articles in the leading journals including Nature, Nature Genetics, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Lancet Digital Health, Hypertension, Journal of Hypertension, Journal of Human Hypertension, Cardiovascular Research, American Journal of Human Genetics, JACC Imaging, JACC, JAMA, Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation and Kidney International.
