Christian Mueller is the Co-founder and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute and a Professor of Cardiology at the University Hospital in Basel Switzerland, a position he has held since 2011. After qualifying from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Munich, Germany, he completed clinical training in internal medicine, intensive care medicine, and cardiology in Germany and Switzerland. He pursued initially postdoctoral research in Intravascular Ultrasound with Professor John Hodgson (Case Western University, Cleveland, USA), and interventional cardiology. Supported by research grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Heart Foundation he was then able to establish his own research group with a focus on the early detection and management of acute heart failure and acute myocardial infarction.
Professor Mueller has authored over 700 publications written in peer-reviewed journals, including 470 peer review original publications, of which 256 as first or last author. Professor Mueller serves on several ESC expert committees. He is also a co-founder and the current president of the GREAT research network. He is associate editor of the European Heart Journal Acute Cardiovascular Care, and the Swiss Medical Weekly. He is also a reviewer for many prestigious journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet and Nature, as well as several granting bodies.
Professor Mueller has been the recipient of several awards for his research. He particularly enjoys mentoring and supporting young physician scientists. Under his leadership already more than 60 young physician scientists have achieved first authorships on manuscripts published in high-impact journals and thereby substantially advanced their academic careers, four of them have meanwhile been appointed as professors in cardiology/medicine themselves.
