Prof. Klas Karlgren
Karolinska Institutet & Western Norway University of Applied Sciences
Klas Karlgren is an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet, a medical university, and the Södersjukhuset hospital, both located in Stockholm, Sweden. He is also an Associate Professor at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, in Bergen, Norway.
As a design science researcher, he is especially fond of methods which focus on capturing the details of learning activities, such as video analysis or using mobile devices for experience-sampling in context. Such methods enable making insights that cannot be obtained using more conventional methods such as interviews or questionnaires.
One area that his work has focused on is simulation-based learning and in particular video-supported post simulation debriefing in learner-centered contexts.
Another area is creating virtual patients, especially in trauma management. A goal is not only to design environments which resemble real cases but which allow reflection and exploration in ways which may surpass what is possible in authentic contexts.
Furthermore, he is involved in work on theories of learning of the kind that emphasizes collaborative knowledge-creation (Trialogical learning).
