En un metaanálisis realizado recientemente, Martineau y cols. evaluaron los efectos de la suplementación con vitamina D en infecciones agudas de las vías respiratorias (superiores e inferiores). La singularidad de este estudio radica en el hecho de que se realizó en una población de 15000 personas. Se demostró que la administración de suplementos con vitamina D se relaciona con una disminución del riesgo de infecciones de las vías respiratorias en la población general (odds ratio [OR] corregida: 0,88; 95 % IC 0,81-0,96), especialmente si la vitamina D se administró a diario (OR corregida: 0,81; 95 % IC: 0,72-0,91) y particularmente en personas con su déficit (OR corregida: 0,30; 95 % IC: 0,17-0,53).43
