La posición más reciente de ADA y EASD2 supone un cambio importante en el enfoque del tratamiento de la diabetes tipo 2. Este consiste, sobre todo, en tener una clara preferencia por iSGLT2 y GLP‑1 RA en todas las etapas de tratamiento, especialmente en enfermos con ECV, IC y/o ERC diagnosticada, así como en prestar mucha más atención a la reducción de la masa corporal.
