Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are infections involving primarily the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissues. They include a wide array of clinical entities. These conditions typically arise from bacterial or less commonly fungal entry through breaches in the skin barrier. They can be nonpurulent (cellulitis, erysipelas, necrotizing fasciitis) or purulent (furuncle, carbuncle, abscess).
