McMaster International Review Course in Internal Medicine (MIRCIM)

The McMaster Textbook of Internal Medicine was conceived as a “living textbook,” a current resource integrating evidence-based information as soon as it becomes available. What adds to its uniqueness is the unrivalled educational value reinforced by a real-life event complementing the text: the McMaster International Review Course in Internal Medicine (MIRCIM).

The Idea

The McMaster Textbook of Internal Medicine is the result of work of hundreds of expert physicians, clinicians, and educators who shape the practice of medicine today. Involved in breakthrough trials and developing clinical practice guidelines used around the world, our authors are often at the forefront of change, charting new trends and responding to emerging patterns. Their invaluable experience makes them uniquely positioned to share their observations and aid medical professionals who seek reliable, practical, and simple evidence-based recommendations. To facilitate this knowledge translation, a new idea was born: bringing the authors and readers together at a course.

The McMaster International Review Course in Internal Medicine (MIRCIM) is held annually since 2015 in Kraków, Poland, and in recent years also online. Developed by the McMaster University Department of Medicine and the Polish Institute for Evidence Based Medicine (PIEBM), it is organized in collaboration with the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM), International Society of Internal Medicine (ISIM), and Jagiellonian University Medical College in partnership with more than 40 national societies of internal medicine from around the world, including the American College of Physicians (ACP).

The Goals

The goal of MIRCIM is to deliver up-to-date reliable knowledge that is useful to general internists, subspecialists, hospitalists, family physicians, residents, and fellows in training specializing in internal medicine. Highly praised by participants for the quality of lectures, topic selection, and social events, the course offers a few days of intensive learning in the heart of a historic European city.

With many topics presented by chapter authors, the lectures share the same distinguishing qualities that make the McMaster Textbook stand out: simplicity, practicality, conciseness, and emphasis on take-home messages. The carefully thought-out program reflects recent landmark developments in different medical fields that practicing professionals and students need to keep abreast of.

CME Credits

The past editions of MIRCIM were accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) with European CME credits (ECMEC®).

Workshops & The Best Case Report Contest

The course additionally offers a number of hands-on workshops and is accompanied by the Best Case Report Contest, where junior internists and trainees in internal medicine from around the world educate one another using examples from their own practice.
