What is the recommended duration of treatment in patients with extraesophageal symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)? When should its efficacy be evaluated?
Peter Malfertheiner: That is the point. As I just mentioned (see: Treatment of GERD with extraesophageal symptoms), increasing the dose and prolonging the duration. The best evidence is for having 12-week treatment before you really decide. But that is crucial: It is better to know whether there is any chance that these conditions are associated with reflux disease instead of just starting to give proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for 3 months and waiting to see if the patient may or may not respond. So the likelihood that patients will respond is much better if you have previously performed another diagnostic procedure.
