When should we treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease? What is the current management?
Francesco Locatelli: The current management of anemia of chronic kidney disease is to avoid normalization of hemoglobin levels. Now we have realized that partial correction of anemia is absolutely important for improving the quality of life of the patients and for avoiding complications. But if you try to normalize the hemoglobin levels, you are increasing the cardiovascular side effects. So the main suggestion is to partially correct anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease without normalizing the hemoglobin levels.
