Age-dependent management of a patient with marked proteinuria

Does the management of a patient with marked proteinuria depend on the patient’s age?

Jürgen Floege: Yes and no. Yes because obviously the age will determine why you have nephrotic syndrome. The management, let’s say, of minimal change [disease] or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in children is very different from that of membranous glomerulonephritis in the elderly. No because the basic treatment approach is very similar. You have to do something against volume overload, you have to do something against hypoproteinemia, you have to do something against the high cholesterol.
