Asthma and NSAIDs

Katharine M. Woessner, MD, is the head of the Division of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at Scripps Clinic Medical Group in San Diego, US.

Should all patients with asthma be advised to avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)?

No, as the prevalence of NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease (NERD) is very low among the asthmatic population, only 7%. If you told all asthmatics to avoid NSAIDs, you’d be doing them a great disservice, so that should not be a routine recommendation for people with asthma.
