Recommended duration of dual antiplatelet therapy after stenting

What is the currently recommended duration of dual antiplatelet treatment in patients after coronary artery stenting, carotid artery stenting, or peripheral artery stenting?

Mark Crowther: This is a very difficult question to answer because there is an awful lot of research going on right now to address this question. Rather than providing a specific answer, I would suggest that you refer to the most recent set of guidelines because they have explicit instructions on duration. For example, the European Society of Cardiology guidelines vary the duration of dual antiplatelet therapy based on the patient’s risk profile. They also discuss in those guidelines how they recommend that patients with coronary artery stenting who also have atrial fibrillation are treated to minimize the risk of both thrombotic events and bleeding.
