What bacterial strains should be present in fecal material used for fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT)? Do you select a donor on the basis of the bacterial strains present in the fecal material?
Christine Lee: There are many unknowns which are related to FMT. When we have done the metagenomics, we were able to identify approximately 20 bacteria that are consistently present in individuals who have had successful FMT.
[As to selecting donors based on bacterial strains,] we have not yet done that, but through our experience we know that when stool of certain individuals is used, the recipients achieve higher cure rates.
