What are the key differences between microbial floras in the hospital and community settings?
Mark Loeb: It is pretty diverse because you have different flora. Let’s look at respiratory flora. In respiratory flora, for example, you do have pathogens like pneumococcus, potentially Legionella, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma in the community; [these are causes of pneumonia]. In the hospital you will get different organisms. People get colonized with gram-negative bacteria, for example, Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas.
It really depends on the type of flora that you are talking about, and this is one example of respiratory flora and the differences.
