What is the role of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection?
Christine Lee: The role of fecal microbiota transplantation, also known as FMT, is an attempt to restore healthy microbiota, bacteria, within the colon of individuals who are affected with C difficile infection. The reason why a lot of people with C difficile infection would develop recurrence is because they no longer have protective healthy microbiota. The idea behind FMT is to restore the healthy microbiota, so that the microbiota will be able to combat growth of C difficile infection.
