What is new in the 2014 International Criteria for Behçet Disease?
Gülen Hatemi, MD: In the new criteria the major organ involvements that were missing from the original criteria are included in order to increase the sensitivity of the criteria.
However, this new set of criteria has lower specificity, and this causes a lot of problems in areas of the world where the prevalence of Behçet syndrome is low. In a very recent study from Birmingham, the specificity of the new criteria was 19%, which I think is quite low to use as a diagnostic test.
