What is the relation between fractures and quality of life, morbidity, and mortality?
Alexandra Papaioannou, MD: What does fracture do to a person’s life? Among individuals who experience a hip fracture, 50% of them will never walk again independently. Despite our best efforts at rehabilitation, they never get back to being independent. Those with spine fractures have ongoing discomfort, their backs are often curved, they may start seeing the world from a different angle because they are curved, their clothes do not fit, and they often can have difficulty dressing.
The good news is that this can be prevented by appropriate preventative treatment by 40% to 60%.
