Coffee and delaying liver fibrosis

Pere Ginès

Are there any factors that could delay liver fibrosis? Is coffee drinking beneficial?

Pere Ginès: I think that even though coffee drinking may have some interest at this moment, in the future—not the distant future but I would say in the midterm future—there will be a number of drugs that, acting by different mechanisms, will be able to reduce fibrosis or at least stop the fibrosis progression in the liver. There is a very intensive ongoing research about antifibrotic drugs. I think that these are the drugs for the future to prevent the development of cirrhosis and prevent also the development of liver cancer.

I think that the evidence that drinking coffee is very helpful in preventing fibrosis progression is not that strong. I would balance the fact of using coffee—benefits and risk of drinking coffee.
