Should Helicobacter pylori infection be eradicated before a long-term treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is started?
Janusz Jankowski, MD, PhD: The evidence to show that in the absence of causing peptic ulcer disease, chronic gastritis, or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma—outside these 3 different classifications—H pylori causes any problems with PPIs is very weak indeed. So the idea of testing to treat it if you are on a long-term PPI is very weak. I would not recommend people do it routinely.
