Dr Tim O’Shea, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at McMaster University, and Dr Robin Lennox, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University, discuss the risks of the hospital environment for people who use drugs, describe the risks of drug-related harms and all-cause mortality among people who use drugs after acute hospitalization, and review strategies to improve retention in acute care and mitigate the risks of unplanned discharge.
