Anemia in hospitalized patients: Vampirism and other tales

Dr Deborah Siegal, associate professor at the University of Ottawa, scientist in the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair, describes the burden of anemia in hospitalized patients, discusses laboratory testing as a modifiable cause of blood loss and anemia, and comments on the effect of switching to tubes that collect less blood for lab testing on red blood cell transfusion in the intensive care unit.
