Dr Matthew Clifford Rashotte, assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at McMaster University, describes the spectrum of group A streptococcal disease, with a particular focus on invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease; reviews the approach to the management of iGAS, including antimicrobial management and adjunctive measures; explains the changing epidemiology of iGAS both locally and globally and highlights potential factors driving an increase in cases; and describes iGAS prevention measures, including infection control considerations, contact management, and the status of vaccine research.
